The first estimate for the euro area (EA17) trade in goods balance with the rest of the world in May 2012 gave a 6.9 bn euro surplus, compared with -1.2 bn in May 2011. The April 2012 balance was +3.7 bn, compared with -4.5 bn in April 2011. In May 2012 compared with April 2012, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 0.3% while imports fell by 0.9%.

Euro area annual inflation was 2.4% in June 2012, unchanged compared with May. A year earlier the rate was 2.7%. Monthly inflation was -0.1% in June 2012. EU annual inflation was 2.6% in June 2012, up from 2.5% in May. A year earlier the rate was 3.1%. Monthly inflation was 0.0% in June 2012.

In May 2012 compared with April 2012, seasonally adjusted industrial production grew by 0.6% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.5% in the EU27. In April production decreased by 1.1% and 0.7% respectively. In May 2012 compared with May 2011, industrial production dropped by 2.8% in the euro area and by 2.3% in the EU27.

Online advertised vacancies rose 232,000 in June to 4,947,100, according to The Conference Board Help Wanted OnLine® (HWOL) Data Series. Following little growth in the first two months of the second quarter, June closed out the quarter with a strong gain. The Supply/Demand rate stands at 2.7 unemployed for every vacancy.

In 2011, 33.3 million foreign citizens lived in the EU27 Member States, accounting for 6.6% of the EU27 population. This foreign population comprised 12.8 million EU citizens living in another Member State, i.e. 2.5% of the EU27 population, and 20.5 million non EU citizens, i.e. 4.1% of the EU27 population.

Regional unemployment rates varied widely across the 27 NUTS 2 regions of the EU27 in 2011, with the lowest rates recorded in the regions of Tirol and Salzburg (both 2.5%) in Austria, Zeeland (2.7%) in the Netherlands and Oberbayern (2.8%), Niederbayern (2.9%) and Freiburg (3.0%) in Germany, while the highest rates were registered in the regions of AndalucŪa (30.4%) and Canarias (29.7%) in Spain and the French Overseas Department of Rťunion (29.6%).

In May 2012 compared with April 2012, the volume of retail trade rose by 0.6% in both the euro area (EA17) and the EU272. In April retail trade fell by 1.4% in both zones. In May 2012, compared with May 2011, the retail sales index dropped by 1.7% in the euro area and by 0.3% in
the EU27.

In April prices rose by 0.1% in the euro area and remained stable in the EU27. In May 2012 compared with May 2011, industrial producer prices gained 2.3% in the euro area and 2.4% in the EU27.

In 2011, EU27 residents made 1.2 billion trips for both leisure and business. After a significant increase between 2006 and 2008, the number of trips has since remained almost stable, with a minor decline in 2010, followed by a slight upward trend in 2011. It should be noted that these figures refer to the trips made by EU residents, whether in their own country, to another EU Member State or elsewhere in the world. They do not include trips made by non EU residents to the EU.
