Between 2000 and 2011, the share in EU27 international trade in goods of the 19 partner countries taking part in the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) increased steadily. From 2000 to 2011, the share of the ASEM partners in EU27 exports rose from 22% to 30%, and in imports from 36% to 44%. The EU27 registered a trade deficit with the ASEM partners during the whole period, growing from 174 billion euro in 2000 to a peak of 300 bn in 2008, before falling to 280 bn in 2011.

At the end of the second quarter of 2012, the government debt to GDP ratio in the euro area (EA17) stood at 90.0%, compared with 88.2% at the end of the first quarter of 2012. In the EU27 the ratio increased from 83.5% to 84.9%. Compared with the second quarter of 2011, the government debt to GDP ratio rose in both the euro area (from 87.1% to 90.0%) and the EU27 (from 81.4% to 84.9%).

In 2011, the government deficit of both the euro area (EA17) and the EU27 decreased in absolute terms compared with 2010, while the government debt rose in both zones. In the euro area the government deficit to GDP ratio decreased from 6.2% in 2010 to 4.1% in 2011, and in the EU27 from 6.5% to 4.4%. In the euro area the government debt to GDP ratio increased from 85.4% at the end of 2010 to 87.3% at the end of 2011, and in the EU27 from 80.0% to 82.5%.

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production rose by 0.7% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.2% in the EU27 in August 2012, compared with the previous month, according to first estimates released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In July 2012, production increased by 0.1% in the euro area and decreased by 0.1% in the EU27. Compared with August 2011, production in August 2012 dropped by 5.5% in the euro area and by 6.8% in the EU27.

Euro area annual inflation was 2.6% in September 2012, unchanged compared with August. A year earlier the rate was 3.0%. Monthly inflation was 0.7% in September 2012. EU3 annual inflation was 2.7% in September 2012, unchanged compared with August. A year earlier the rate was 3.3%. Monthly inflation was 0.6% in September 2012.

The first estimate for the euro area (EA17) trade in goods balance with the rest of the world in August 2012 gave a 6.6 bn euro surplus, compared with -5.7 bn in August 2011. The July 2012 balance was +14.7 bn, compared with +2.1 bn in July 2011. In August 2012 compared with July 2012, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 3.7% and imports by 2.1%. These data are released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

According to the latest Labour Force Survey, almost 70% of employed persons (which includes both employees and self-employed) in the EU27 worked within the service sector in 2011, compared with 62% in 2000. Market services, such as trade, transportation, financial activities etc. accounted for 39% of persons employed in 2011, while mainly non-market services, such as public administration, education, health etc. accounted for 30%. The industry and construction sector accounted for 25% and agriculture for 5%.
