EU annual inflation was 2.6% in October 2012, down from 2.7% in September. A year earlier the rate was 3.4%. Monthly inflation was 0.3% in October 2012.

In September 2012 compared with August 2012, seasonally adjusted industrial production fell by 2.5% in the euro area (EA17) and by 2.3% in the EU27, according to estimates released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In August production increased by 0.9% and 0.5% respectively. In September 2012 compared with September 2011, industrial production dropped by 2.3% in the euro area and by 2.7% in the EU27.

Across the country, consumers remain cautious about taking on new debt. Overall consumer debt levels fell $256 billion in the third quarter versus the same period a year ago, according to new Credit Trends data released by Equifax. However, the 2.28 percent year-over-year decline is the slowest rate of decline since the second quarter of 2009, showing that some of the caution may be starting to lift.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index®, which had increased in September, improved again in October. The Index now stands at 72.2 (1985=100), up from 68.4 in September. The Present Situation Index increased to 56.2 from 48.7. The Expectations Index rose to 82.9 from 81.5 last month.

In both zones, rates have risen significantly compared with September 2011, when they were 10.3% and 9.8% respectively. The household investment rate fell in both the euro area and the EU27. In the euro area, household income1 per capita fell by 0.5% in real terms, after a decrease of 0.3% in the previous quarter.
