Labour Force Survey in 2011

Among the 42 million part-time workers in the EU27 in 2011, 8.6 million wished to work more hours, were available to do so and can therefore be considered to be underemployed. These accounted for 20.5% of part-time workers and 4.0% of total employment. In 2010, the corresponding figures were very similar: 41.3 million persons worked part time and 8.5 million were underemployed.

Construction Output Down by 7.1% in Euro Area: February 2012

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production fell by 7.1% in the euro area (EA17) and by 3.7% in the EU27 in February 2012, compared with the previous month. In January, production decreased by 0.5% and 3.9% respectively. Compared with February 2011, output in February 2012 dropped by 12.9% in the euro area and by 9.4% in the EU27.

EU27 Current Account Surplus 13.1 bn euro: the Fourth Quarter of 2011

According to the latest available data, the EU27 external current account recorded a surplus of 13.1 billion euro in the fourth quarter of 2011, compared with a deficit of 14.5 bn in the fourth quarter of 2010. This is the first current account surplus recorded for the EU27 since the third quarter of 2002.

Euro Area Annual Inflation Stable at 2.7%: March 2012

Euro area annual inflation was 2.7% in March 2012, unchanged compared with February. A year earlier the rate was 2.7%. Monthly inflation was 1.3% in March 2012. EU annual inflation was 2.9% in March 2012, unchanged compared with February. A year earlier the rate was 3.1%. Monthly inflation was 1.1% in March 2012.

Nearly Half of European Online Audience Visit Sports Sites

comScore, Inc. released an overview of internet usage in Europe, showing that 386.6 million Europeans went online in February 2012 for an average of 28.2 hours per person. This release highlights internet usage in 49 European markets aggregated into the European region and provides individual reporting on 18 markets. Amongst its findings, the study also showed that 46 percent of Europeans visit Sports sites, with Turkey and Ireland having the highest penetration at approximately 70 percent in February 2012.

Euro Area External Trade Surplus 2.8 bn euro: February 2012

The first estimate for the euro area (EA17) trade in goods balance with the rest of the world in February 2012 gave a 2.8 bn euro surplus, compared with -2.8 bn in February 2011. The January 2012 balance was -7.9 bn, compared with -16.1 bn in January 2011. In February 2012 compared with January 2012, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 2.4% and imports by 3.5%.

The average tenure of a CEO declined to 8.4 years in 2011 from approximately 10 years in 2000, according to the 2012 edition of CEO Succession Practices, a new report by The Conference Board, the global business research and membership organization.

Industrial Production up by 0.5% in Euro Area: February 2012

In February 2012 compared with January 2012, seasonally adjusted industrial production grew by 0.5% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.2% in the EU27. In January production remained stable in both zones. In February 2012 compared with February 2011, industrial production dropped by 1.8% in both the euro area and the EU27.

The Conference Board Employment Trends Index™ (ETI) decreased 0.18 percent in March to 107.28, down from the revised figure of 107.47 in February. The March figure is still up over 5 percent (5.2) from the same month a year ago.
