The current demographic situation in the EU27 is characterised by continuing population growth as well as by an ageing population. On 1 January 2012, the EU27 population was estimated at 503.7 million, a growth of 6% compared with 1992. Over the same period, the share of those aged 65 years or older in the population increased from 14% to 18%. As well as the population age structure, family structures are also changing, influenced by fewer marriages, more divorces and an increasing share of children born outside marriage.

In 2012, there were 332 000 asylum applicants registered in the EU27. It is estimated that around 90% of these were new applicants and around 10% were repeat applicants. In 2011, there were 302 000 asylum applicants.

After growing steadily between 2002 and 2007, the total weight of goods handled in maritime ports in the EU27 remained nearly stable at 3.9 billion tonnes in 2008. It then fell by 12% to 3.4 bn tonnes in 2009 as the result of the economic crisis. From 2010 the weight of goods handled increased again, to reach 3.7 bn tonnes in 2011, still below the level recorded in 2008. Compared with 2010, the weight of goods handled increased by 2% in 2011.

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production fell by 1.4% in the euro area (EA17) and by 1.3% in the EU272 in January 2013, compared with the previous month, according to first estimates released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In December 2012, production increased by 0.3% in the euro area, but declined by 0.6% in the EU27.

The first estimate for the euro area (EA17) trade in goods balance with the rest of the world in January 2013 gave a 3.9 billion euro deficit, compared with -9.1 bn in January 2012. The December 2012 balance was +10.8 bn, compared with +8.0 bn in December 2011. In January 2013 compared with December 2012, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 2.0% and imports by 3.1%. These data are released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

Euro area annual inflation was 1.8% in February 2013, down from 2.0% in January. A year earlier the rate was 2.7%. Monthly inflation was 0.4% in February 2013.

Hourly labour costs in the euro area (EA17) rose by 1.3% in the year up to the fourth quarter of 2012, compared with 1.8% for the third quarter of 2012. In the EU27, the annual rise was also 1.3% up to the fourth quarter of 2012, compared with 1.8% in the previous quarter. These figures are published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

The number of persons employed decreased by 0.3% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.2% in the EU27 in the fourth quarter of 2012 compared with the previous quarter, according to national accounts estimates published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In the third quarter of 2012, employment decreased by 0.1% in the euro area and remained stable in the EU27. These figures are seasonally adjusted.
