Nonfarm business sector labor productivity decreased at a 0.3 percent annual rate during the second quarter of 2011, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported, with output and hours worked rising 1.8 percent and 2.0 percent, respectively. (All quarterly percent changes in this release are seasonally adjusted annual rates.) From the second quarter of 2010 to the second quarter of 2011, output increased 2.5 percent while hours rose 1.6 percent, yielding an increase in productivity of 0.8 percent.

Little noted among the employment figures released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics is a growing gap between women’s and men’s employment as the recovery proceeds. Men gained 136,000 payroll jobs in July, at the same time women lost 19,000. A fact sheet released by the Institute for Women's Policy Research shows that throughout the recovery men have been gaining a disproportionate share of the jobs, even taking into account that men lost many more jobs than women in what was dubbed the “mancession.”

comScore, Inc., a leader in measuring the digital world, released its Q2 2011 U.S. retail e-commerce sales estimates, which showed that online retail spending reached $37.5 billion for the quarter, up 14 percent versus year ago. This growth rate represented the seventh consecutive quarter of positive year-over-year growth and third consecutive quarter of double-digit growth rates.
