Demand for Used Small Cars Pushes Price Surge in 2011

Elevated gas prices have helped to drive a surge in used compact car prices, according to a data analysis by Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information. Edmunds.com’s data reveal that consumers paid about 10 percent more for used three-year-old compact cars in July than in January. By comparison, prices for this segment rose just 1.6 percent over the same period in 2010, and 1.1 percent in 2008, the last time gas prices crept over $4/gallon.

Online Labor Demand Down 163,900 in August 2011

Online advertised vacancies were down 163,900 in August to 3,990,600, according to The Conference Board Help Wanted OnLine® (HWOL) Data Series. The August drop follows a decline of 217,000 in July and a decrease of 100,000 in June. The Supply/Demand rate stands at 3.35, indicating there were just over 3 unemployed for every online advertised vacancy in July, the latest monthly data available for unemployment.

U.S. Productivity and Costs, Second Quarter 2011

Nonfarm business sector labor productivity decreased at a 0.7 percent annual rate during the second quarter of 2011, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported, with output and hours worked rising 1.3 percent and 2.0 percent, respectively. (All quarterly percent changes in this release are seasonally adjusted annual rates.) From the second quarter of 2010 to the second quarter of 2011, output increased 2.4 percent while hours rose 1.6 percent, yielding an increase in productivity of 0.7 percent.

Mortgage rates reset record lows this week, with the benchmark conforming 30-year fixed mortgage rate falling to 4.37 percent, according to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey. The average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.38 discount and origination points.

The euro area (EA17) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 10.0% in July 2011, unchanged compared with June. It was 10.2% in July 2010. The EU27 unemployment rate was 9.5% in July 2011, unchanged compared with June. It was 9.7% in July 2010.

International Trade Statistics: Trends in Second Quarter 2011

Merchandise trade growth slowed across major economies in the second quarter of 2011. Total imports of G7 and BRICS countries grew by only 1.1% in the second quarter compared to 10.1% in the previous quarter. Total export growth slowed to 1.9%, compared to 7.7% in the previous quarter.

The study surveyed more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers and found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer overall with 25.5 percent market share. Google Android continued to gain ground in the smartphone market reaching 41.8 percent market share.
