Fitch Ratings says that recent decisions by certain UK government-owned lenders to allow homeowners six months of arrears before commencing repossession proceedings will not have an immediate impact upon ratings of UK Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities (RMBS) from these lenders. However, Fitch views the impact of a government proposal last week to introducea two-year interest deferral period for certain distressed borrowers as uncertain, until more details emerge.

The 13 members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) pumped an average 31.38 million barrels per day (b/d) of crude oil in November, according to a Platts survey of OPEC and oil industry officials just released. This is a decline of 880,000 from the October level of 32.26 million b/d.

Top analysts report that the United States has been in a recession for the past year, and no one knows that better than the self-employed and micro-business. Seventy percent of entrepreneurs consider their micro-business a career, one that presently supplies the main source of income to their households. According to data released by the National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE), their top concerns are going out of business, being forced to put off retirement, and an increased cost of living.

Mortgage rates fell again last week, hitting as low as 5.10 percent last Friday, after the government's decision to purchase mortgage-backed securities. The weekly average rates for 30-year fixed mortgages declined to 5.34 percent, down from 5.53 percent the week prior, according to the Zillow Mortgage Rate Monitor, compiled by leading real estate Web site Zillow.com(R).

The EP Agriculture Committee called for "immediate and continuous action" to ensure global food security. It believes the aid of EUR 1 billion that the EU has decided to give to developing countries should be accompanied by fresh investment in agriculture and it calls for mechanisms to be set up to ensure that sufficient global food stocks are available.
