Online advertised vacancies dropped 100,000 to 3,248,000 in March, according to The Conference Board Help-Wanted Online Data Series (HWOL)™. The March loss follows sharp drops of 507,000 in December and 506,000 in January and a very modest dip of 6,600 in February. This has resulted in a decline of over 1,120,000 advertised vacancies, or over 25 percent, in the last four months.

Almost 10% of SMBs (small and medium businesses with up to 999 employees) in India are planning to hire additional staff, according to a recent study by New York-based Access Markets International (AMI) Partners. "The hiring growth of 10% is substantially less than the previous year’s 50%," says Kalyan Banga, Research Analyst at AMI-Partners. "However, it is still quite significant considering the global market’s current slowdown."

Economic confidence among small business owners saw its largest jump in confidence in nine months as fewer owners see the economy getting worse and more believe conditions are improving for their own operations, according to the latest Discover® Small Business WatchSM. The monthly index increased more than six points, rising to 78.2 in March from 71.9 in February.

In March, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) for the EU and the euro area declined again, but more slowly than in the first two months of the year amid signs of stabilisation in some sectors. It fell by 0.6 points in the EU, and by 0.7 points in the euro area, to 60.3 and 64.6 respectively. The indicators for both regions now stand at their lowest levels since the current series was launched in January 1985.

Viviane Reding, the European Union's Commissioner for Information Society and Media, asked the information and communication technologies (ICT) industry for intensified efforts for tackling climate change. She warned that the measures in place so far to meet the EU's objective of cutting energy use by 20% by 2020 will only improve energy efficiency by 13 percent".
