The Conference Board Employment Trends Index™ (ETI) increased in November to 103.7, up from the revised figure of 102.42 in October. The November figure is up 6.4 percent from the same month a year ago.

In October 2011 compared with September 2011, the industrial producer price index rose by 0.1% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.2% in the EU27. In September prices increased by 0.3% and 0.4% respectively. In October 2011 compared with October 2010, industrial producer prices gained 5.5% in the euro area and 6.4% in the EU27.

In 2010, EU27 external trade in services recovered compared with 2009 to reach levels equal or above those of 2008. EU27 exports of services to the rest of the word rose by 11%, from 484 billion euro in 2009 to 539 bn in 2010, and EU27 imports increased by 9%, from 416 bn to 454 bn. As a result, EU27 trade in services recorded a higher surplus of +85 bn in 2010, compared with +67 bn in 2009 and +71 bn in 2008.

comScore, a leader in measuring the digital world, reported holiday season retail e-commerce spending for the first 20 days of the November – December 2011 holiday season, as well as its official spending forecast for the season. For the holiday season-to-date, $9.7 billion has been spent online, marking a 14-percent increase versus the corresponding days last year. Wednesday, November 16 has been the heaviest online spending day of the season to date at $688 million.

Cyber Monday broke online sales records last year, and according to CareerBuilder's latest survey, the trend may be poised to continue. Fifty percent of American workers plan to spend time holiday shopping online at work this season – on par with 52 percent last year. Of these workers, 34 percent will spend one hour or more shopping (up from 27 percent in 2010) and 16 percent will spend two or more hours (up from 13 percent in 2010).

The USA remained the EU's largest trading partner for both goods and services at the end of the first half of 2011. However, there has been a steady decline in the share of the USA in total EU27 trade in goods over the last decade. While in 2000, the USA accounted for 28% of total EU27 exports and 21% of imports, by 2010 these shares had fallen to 18% and 11% respectively.

Obesity and overweight are serious public health problems that can be statistically measured using the Body Mass Index (BMI) of adults. Obesity is defined as a BMI of over 30. Among the 19 Member States for which data are available, the proportion of obese people in the adult population varied in 2008/9 between 8.0% and 23.9% for women and between 7.6% and 24.7% for men. In the USA, the corresponding figure was 26.8% for women and 27.6% for men in 2009.
