Investors’ confidence in U.S. markets and the economy is slipping, with 48% of investors polled expressing bullish sentiments about the markets, compared with 57% in May 2009, according to the latest MoneyShow.com Investors’ Sentiment Indicator. The number of bearish investors has increased to 34% from 28% since the last poll in May.

In June 2009 compared with May 2009, the euro area (EA16) industrial new orders index rose by 3.1%. In May the index decreased by 0.5%. In the EU27 new orders fell by 0.4% in June 2009, after rising by 0.5% in May. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment, for which changes tend to be more volatile, industrial new orders grew by 1.9% in the euro area and by 1.1% in the EU27.

Employers took 2,157 mass layoff actions in July that resulted in the separation of 206,791 workers, seasonally adjusted, as measured by new filings for unemployment insurance benefits during the month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported.

Regional and state unemployment rates were generally little changed in July. Twenty-six states reported over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 17 states and the District of Columbia registered rate decreases, and 7 states had no rate change, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Over the year, jobless rates increased in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. At 9.4 percent in July, the national unemployment rate was little changed from June, but was 3.6 percentage points higher than a year earlier.

American families are making the investment in higher education the smart way – by pursuing grants and scholarships more frequently than borrowing – according to Sallie Mae’s How America Pays for College study, conducted by Gallup. The study found that among American families, 51 percent received grants and scholarships, 25 percent of students borrowed federal loans, 12 percent of students borrowed private education loans and 5 percent used credit cards to pay for college expenses. Fifty-eight percent of families paid for college last year without borrowing at all.
